As I make clear in my book, The Magic of Fire, a piece of string and a nail works equal to, and sometimes better than a spit. Two bricks can substitute for an iron tripod or trivet. The one piece of specialized equipment that is most useful is a camping Dutch oven. These are easy to find — they are sold at most camping supply stores.
