Hearth Cooking Equipment
I would like to emphasize that one does not need a single piece of speicalized equipment to cook on ones hearth. Fireplace cooking requires a certain amount confidenct — a willingess to try something new — to take risks — but it does not require expensive equipment. As I make clear in my book, The Magic of Fire, a piece of string and a nail works equal to, and sometimes better than a spit. Two bricks can substitute for an iron tripod or trivet. The one piece of specialized equipment that is most useful is a camping Dutch oven. These are easy to find — they are sold at most camping supply stores. All this said, there is a great pleasure in accumulating special tools for ones hobby. I have no relationship with the suppliers listed here. These are intended to get you started acquiring the few pieces of specialized equipment that graced most hearths before the days of the kitchen stove.
